According to the requirements of the EU AFIR regulation, the total capacity of charging infrastructure in Poland must increase by roughly half by 2025, more than six times by 2030 and 15 times by 2035, the director of the Research and Analysis Centre of the Polish New Mobility Association (PSNM) Jan Wiśniewski informed.

"We are starting the cyclical publication of a new 'AFIR counter', which will show the degree of implementation of the requirements of the EU AFIR regulation in the Polish market," Wiśniewski said during the conference 'TransAFIRmation - the future of sustainable transport in Poland'.

Among the criteria that will be published as part of the new indicator are the level of adjustment of charging capacity to the number of electric cars, as well as the level of saturation of the TEN-T network with charging zones, in terms of capacity and distance between them.

The current total output of the electric car charging infrastructure in Poland is around 233.9 MW, and according to the AFIR, there should be 1.3 kW per fully electric car and 0.8 kW per plug-in hybrid.

"Taking into account the projections for the development of the all-electric car fleet in Poland, this means that by 2025 this capacity should increase by about half, to 342.4 MW, by 2030. - already more than six times, to 1.52 GW, and by 2035 - more than fifteen times, to 3.58 GW," emphasised Wisniewski.

The AFIR also stipulates, among other things, the need to deploy charging zones (each with a total capacity of at least 400 kW and at least 600 kW by 2027) every 60 km along the TEN-T core network in each direction of travel. The 'AFIR counter' shows that, here too, Poland is very far from meeting the regulation's objectives.

Taking the core network into account, the obligations under the AFIR in terms of network coverage (for 2025 and 2027) are currently met at around 8% and 2% respectively, and in terms of the capacity of charging zones along this network at 22% and 15% respectively.

The Polish New Mobility Association (PSNM, formerly the Polish Alternative Fuels Association) is the largest industry organisation in Poland, creating the electromobility market and promoting zero- and low-emission technologies in transport.
