Skanska Hungary - Accessibility in commercial buildings design: An indispensable aspect

Accessibility is increasingly recognised as a crucial aspect of architecture, with companies across the globe acknowledging its importance in creating inclusive environments. Based on its commitment to inclusivity and sustainability, Skanska places a significant focus on accessibility. To ensure that it is thoughtfully designed and implemented, the company collaborates with the social impact company, Access4you, aiming to achieve the highest qualification of access4you® certification in its buildings.

Starting with the development of Nordic Light Trio, Skanska pledged to attain the highest accessibility certifications for its buildings. In line with this, H2Offices continued this path, maintaining and further enhancing the high standards of accessibility. From the design phase of its projects, Skanska focuses on removing barriers to accessibility, ensuring all aspects of its buildings, from the external environment to internal facilities, are friendly to everyone. This includes motorized entrance doors, touchless solutions, wide access paths, dedicated restrooms for disabled people on every floor, and operational support such as sign language interpretation programs and portable induction loops for hearing impaired persons.

“Skanska's approach to accessibility goes beyond compliance; it views inclusivity as a one of the main pillars of each investment.. Our aim is not just to meet but to exceed the accessibility requirements set by Access4you with the first phase of H2Offices, which got a Gold certification from Access4you.” said András Ábrahám, the project director for H2Offices at Skanska’s commercial development unit in Hungary. “Guided by them, we continually explore new accessibility features that are practical and creating significant value,” he added.

Design Considerations for Unmatched Accessibility.

Skanska's approach considers every aspect of a building's accessibility, including:
• External Environment and Approach: Ensuring easy access to buildings through close proximity to public transport, safe approach routes, car parking with dished kerbs, and entrances featuring ramps and steps designed for ease of use.
• Vertical and Horizontal Circulation: Facilitating movement within buildings with well-designed lifts, corridors, and open plan areas that are navigable and safe for all users.
• Facilities: Focusing on the independence of all users to access the provided facilities, including reception areas designed for ease of communication and accessible restrooms.
• Interior Design: Enhancing the user experience through thoughtful interior design that prioritizes navigation, ease of use, and safety.
• Evacuation/Emergencies: Ensuring the safety of all users in emergency situations with well-located emergency equipment and clearly highlighted safety zones.

The successful implementation of these measures in H2Offices sets an industry benchmark and serves as a foundation for the design and development of the company’s next project.
