Net financial result of banks increased by 160.5% y/y to PLN 27.64 billion in 202

The net financial result of banks amounted to PLN 27,639 million in 2023, an increase of 160.5% y/y, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. The total balance sheet total of banks was higher than in the previous year by 10.3% higher than in the previous year and amounted to PLN 2,949.79 billion.

The net financial result of the banking sector in 2023 in the amount of PLN 27.6 billion was made up of net profits amounting to PLN 38.4 billion generated by 541 banks (50 commercial and 491 cooperatives) and net losses of PLN 10.7 billion incurred by 14 banks (13 commercial ones, including 8 branches of credit institutions, and 1 cooperative), it reported.

The total balance sheet total of banks was higher than in the previous year by 10.3% higher than in the previous year and amounted to PLN 2,949.79 billion.

The Central Statistical Office also reported that compared to the end of the previous year, the gross loan value for the non-financial sector decreased in 2023 to PLN 1 147.2 billion (by 1.9%), with a decrease in the value of loans to PLN 411.8 billion (by 2.7%) and the value of loans for households to PLN 727.1 billion (by 1.4%).

The value of deposits of the non-financial sector increased in 2023 to PLN 1803.4 billion (by 10.2%), and the value of general government deposits decreased to PLN 182.4 billion (by 2.0%), also indicated.

According to the state on 31 December 2023, the value of deposits of the non-financial sector and the general government sector amounted to PLN 1,988.8 billion (by 8.9% more than a year ago), of which 90.8% belonged to the non-financial sector, and 9.2% to the general government sector. In the structure of deposits of the non-financial sector, 67.8% were current deposits. The share of fixed-term deposits increased to 32.2% (by 1.5 percentage points), GUS further reported.

In 2023, there was a decrease in the number of banks operating in Poland to 555 banks, i.e. by 5, with a decrease in the number of commercial banks to 63 (by 1 bank) and the number of cooperative banks to 492 (by 4 banks).
