The OKD Darkov mine in Karvina has begun allowing workers to return to work gradually, following a serious outbreak of Covid-19 that threatened to spread to the rest of the community. OKD has suffered at least CZK 100 million in losses because of the closure of the mine as it worked with hygienic officials to stamp out the virus. Most of the miners were told to remain at home with pay. A total of 830 miners who tested positive for the disease but are now virus-free have been allowed to return to work. It will take roughly a week to renew full mining activities and to ensure that safety equipment and procedures are functioning correctly, including new anti-Covid measures. An aggressive schedule of testing will be implemented to avoid new outbreaks.
