Construction output in the Czech Republic fell by 8.3 percent year-on-year in March, the most significant decline in more than three years. This is according to data published today by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). Both civil and building construction weakened. The number of housing starts fell by almost a fifth compared to March last year. Output in the construction sector also fell month-on-month by 7.8 percent.

Compared to last year, construction output in March fell by 11.1 per cent in civil engineering, i.e. building construction. Civil engineering construction, which includes the construction of roads or telecommunications and energy networks, weakened more modestly, by 0.9 percent. "While the year-on-year decline was entirely driven by civil engineering, civil engineering construction contributed more to the month-on-month decline," said Petra Cuřínová, head of the ČSÚ's construction and housing statistics department.
