The Paks Nuclear Power Plant in central Hungary is gearing up for an expansion. The project company Paks II is set to submit an application for an implementation license for two new blocks at the power plant next week, according to János Süli, the minister without portfolio in charge of the upgrade. The National Atomic Energy Office (OAH) has 15 months to review the 283,000-page application. The license, which would certify that the new blocks meet safety requirements, could be issued in September 2021, said Süli, who served as CEO of the power plant from 2009 until 2010. Süli added that the European Commission decided recently that groundwork at the site could begin before an implementation license is awarded.
