The Croatian oil refinery group INA has requested that its biorefinery project in Sisak be classified as a strategic investment project. The company expects that some of €250m needed for the investment will be provided by the EU Innovation Fund. INA claims that despite the challenging business environment, work is progressing on the project, including the transformation of the location in Sisak into an industrial center. The biorefinery would enable the company to produce second-generation bioethanol from biomass.

In a first step towards the project's realization, INA signed a license agreement with the French group AXENS for its Futurol technology, as well as a base design agreement. INA is also contractually committed with the Belgian company De Smet Engineers & Contractors for the basic design for auxiliary plants and the integration of the existing refinery infrastructure.
