Zuzana Čaputová assumed the office of President of Slovakia over the weekend, making her the first woman ever to hold the post. Until the murder by the journalist Jan Kuciak, Čaputová had been known primarily for her work as a lawyer in the non-profit sector, including in the fight against an illegal dump in Pezink outside of Bratislava. However, this activity brought her into direct conflict with powerful political parties forces in Slovakia. What's remarkable about her victory is that campaign observers say she achieved it without resorting to ugly personal attacks and lies against her rivals. "There are no shortcuts slong the road to the best possible Slovakia," she said in her inauguration speech. "We have to say this in all frankness. We will have to make the entire trip step-by-step."
