Brno's city council is holding a tender to choose a company that would carry out a feasibility study for building an underground rail line. It's an idea that's been kicking around in the Moravian capital since the 1970's, but there's never been a consensus on whether to make it a train or tram connection or even whether the investment makes economic sense. Like all transportation issues in Brno, it's connected with the planned construction of a new main train station and how the rail line leading to the current station will be used. With traffic worsening in Brno and the city's public transport system overloaded, city planners have envisioned essentially digging a deep trench where the current rail lines are and laying new tracks for a high passenger capacity system.
