The severity of the impact of the coronavirus on Austria's economy is becoming clear through its skyrocketing unemployment rate. The number of unemployed people reached 517,122 in May, a jump of 174,000 compared to May 2019. The reopening of the economy has led to a reduction in the number of unemployed, which peaked in April at 588,234, but at 11.5 percent, the situation is still serious. Austria currently has the eighth highest unemployment rate in Europe, with its tourism sector the worst affected.
