Zijin Mining Group will build a copper smelter at the Majdanpek open pit mine in eastern Serbia. Zijin is expected to apply for the construction permits by the end of this year, with construction to start soon after, according to Energy Minister Aleksandar Antic. The company is expanding its activity in Serbia. Last December, Zijin acquired the majority stake in RTB Bor and renamed it Zijin Bor Copper. The company said it is planning to invest $1.26bn to improve production efficiency at Zijin Bor Copper and open new mines.
