Volkswagen's Slovak division will be reducing its workforce by 3,000 people this year, but the company insists this doesn't mean people are getting laid off in mass firings. Its spokeswoman Lucia Kovarovič Makayová told Hospodářské noviny it would simply not be replacing people who were naturally going to move on ayway. This includes workers who will be moving, including 500 who will be returning to a Hungarian VW production unit. But the company is also ramping down from three-shift SUV production to just two shifts per day, while smaller city cars will only be produced during one shift per day. Last year, output at the Bratislava plant rose 12.8 percent to 408,208 cars. Despite the falling numbers of workers, the plant plans to increase production by 30 percent by the end of next year. The company employed 14,800 people last year.
