Spain will €3bn to provide a minimum income to the poorest of its citizens. Social Protection Minister Jose Luis Escriva said he expects the government to approve the country's first, non-universal support program this week, which is intended to support 850,000 households nationwide. Under the scheme, households with children will be given priority to the support, which will be capped at half of the minimum wage in Spain (currently around € 1,108).

Escriva added that the move could help rebuild the informal economy, which according to the International Monetary Fund makes up about 20 percent of GDP, because users would be obliged to give their data to the tax authorities. In order to encourage recipients to continue looking for jobs, the support will be offered for a limited time only.
