The Slovak president Andrej Kiska is expected to accept a revised list of cabinet members today from the country's incoming prime minister, Peter Pellegrini. Kiska had rejected Pellegrini's first proposed cabinet primarily because the sensitive post of interior ministry had been given to the son of a rock star who was an acquaintance of the previous minister. Outrage over the murder of an investigative journalist tracking down connections between organized crime and government officials led to unprecedented demonstrations against the interior ministry and the former prime minister Robert Fico. Both resigned, allowing president Kiska to assemble a new government. The new interior minister will be Tomas Drucker who had originally been nominated to lead the health ministry. Kiska insisted the government shake-up had to be more than a merely cosmetic change, but it remains to be seen if the Slovak public can accept anything less than early elections.
