About 20 percent of Russian restaurants were forced to close by the time the third stage of opening the country's economy began, according to Sergey Mironov, Vice-President of the Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers of Russia. He warned that previous predictions that 50 percent of restaurants could shut down by the end of the year could still prove accurate. Margarita Kosteyeva, President of Rosinter Restaurants Holding PJSC (IL Patio, Planeta Sushi, Shikari, American Bar and Grill brands) said she fears that restaurant revenues could stay below pre-crisis levels for the next six to 12 months restaurant revenues will remain below the pre-crisis level. The Shokoladnitsa Group of Companies, which manages a chain of coffee houses, confirmed that the customer numbers have fallen by an average of 25 to 30 percent. The company ran 300 units in 2019, but has since reduced its total to 250. Fast food restaurants have continued their expansion, however, despite the pandemic. KFC began opening restaurants immediately after restrictions were lifted while McDonald’s plans to surpass the number of 800 restaurants in Russia by the end of the year.
