The Czech Highway Authority (RSD) has submitted plans to widen Prague's ring road between Barrandov and the D5 motorway junction. This section of the road offers just two lanes in each direction, but due to increasing levels of traffic they're unable to handle the load and become blocked. "The problems arise mainly in the morning and afternoon peak times when a small accident can cause backup, or even just someone braking suddenly causes a chain reaction backup," said RSD's spokesman Jan Studecký. The 7 km section of the outer ring road was completed in 1983 and to this day remains its busiest section. Construction could begin by 2023.
