The City of Prague has approved the construction of an aerial tram that will cross the Vltava river in order to connect Prague 6's Podbaba neighborhood with the Bohnice housing estate in Prague 8. The route will also serve recreational areas along the right bank of the Vltava as well as the Prague zoo in Troja. The gondola cars will be able to hold as many as 35 people which would leave once per minute, which would give the system a capacity of 2,000 per hour in each direction. It's no coincidence that this is the number of passengers a tram line can handle, since the gondola lift is only a temporary solution to the current lack of public transportation between the locations. In the long-term, the city is planning to build both a bridge across the river and a tram line that would connect the two districts, but this would also require the construction of a tunnel on the Bohnice side. The aerial tram could be completed within five years.
