Václav Havel Airport Prague plans to invest CZK 14bn into a massive facelift and a new runway. The first wave of investment will focus on improvements of the existing infrastructure, including the strengthening of passport control, according to the daily Hospodářské noviny. The airport should increase its current capacity to handle 1,500 passengers per hour up to 2,500. Václav Řehoř, director of Český Aeroholding which operates the airport, told the paper he expects the number of passengers in Europe to double over the next 20 years. Last year, 12 million passengers passed through the Prague airport and this year the number could reach 12.7 million. Roughly CZK 1.2bn is invested annually into the airport, a figure that should rise by CZK 700m, according to Řehoř. However, the plan awaits approval by by the majority shareholder of Český Aeroholding, the Czech Finance Ministry. Český Aeroholding reported a record profit in 2015 of CZK 3.9bn.
