Port Everglades to undergo $437m expansion
The Broward County Commission has unanimously approved a $437.5 million expansion project for Port Everglades. The plans call for tripling its existing deepwater turn-around area, for the installation of crane rail infrastructure for new Super Post-Panamax cranes and for an expansion of the port’s turn-around area to allow for five new cargo berths and space for larger cargo ships. In June, the port will ask the commission to approve a separate agreement to purchase three new Super Post-Panamax container cranes, expected to be delivered in 2019, with an option to purchase another three. The port acts as a gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Last year the port, which doesn't rely on local tax dollars to operate, handled more than 1 million 20-foot cargo container units.
