A new plasma melting plant opened at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, following a €31m investment. The facility will reduce the volume of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste from two Soviet-made 1,000 megawatt units as well as four smaller reactors that were shut between 2002 and 2006. The plasma plant was built by Iberdrola and Belgoprocess. The Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund, managed by EBRD, covered 65 percent of the cost, while the Bulgarian government funded the rest. In 2017, construction started on a national depot for long-term radioactive waste, which should open by 2021.
