The discount grocery chain Lidl is being forced by a shrinking supply of land to abandon its strategy of building new stores primarily on stand alone plots of land. MediaGuru.cz writes that nearly half of its new stores now under construction are being built in existing buildings. "We've widened the strategy of owning our own stores so that we're currently able to adapt to the requirements for development projects, not just residential ones but for shopping centers and office complexes," said Lidl's spokeswoman Zuzana Holá. She gives the example of its new store above the Želivského metro station in Prague. Construction took five months but the result is a classic Lidl store with 1,230 square meters. What's less typical is that it offers no parking at all. Hola says the company is even looking for spaces for stores as small as 450 sqm.
