Austria has opened its borders since midnight and lifted quarantine measures for seven of its neighbors. But they remain closed with its eighth neighbor, Italy, a decision which has met with fierce criticism from Rome. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz had pushed for the border to be opened on June 15 but ran into opposition from the Minister of Social Affairs Rudolf Anshober. Anshober says opening the Italian border to send thousands of Austrians back to Italy for their vacation at a time when their southern neighbors have not yet come to grips with the coronavirus. Kurz and Foreign Minister Alexander Schalenberg have proposed open up to at least some regions of Italy less impacted by the virus, but Anshober is having none of it.
