Helsinki City Council gave approval yesterday evening for a new zoning area plan in Östersundom, will see the city expand to the east. The plan, which was created in collaboration with Vantaa and Sipoo councils, calls for the construction of enough apartments and single family homes to serve up to 100,000 new residents. The plan includes zones for recreational activities as well as nature reserves. To make the new district viable, work will have to begin first on an extension of the Helsinki metro network into Östersundom before construction in the area can begin.
