Having survived Greece's protracted financial crisis, the textile industry is now in steep decline due to COVID-19 pandemic. Until as recently as two weeks ago, the sector was performing well and constituted a dynamic part of the country's export industry. Textiles made up to 10 percent of all manufactured goods exports. But over the past 10 days, four major textile factories have ceased operations: Nafpaktos Textile Industry in Attica, the Varvaressos textile factory in northern Greece, Fieratex, also in northern Greece and the Epilektos textile factory in Attica. Together, these factories employ around 600 people but it's unclear how many will have a job to return to once the crisis ends.
