Drahoš cruises easily into presidential runoff election
As expected, Miloš Zeman won the first round of the Czech presidential elections, setting up a finale in two-week's time with the second place finisher, Jiří Drahoš. But the country's current president performance failed to live up to expectations. Zeman managed just 38 percent of the vote, while Drahoš performed better than anticipated with 26 percent. Most of the other candidates in the field of nine have pledged to support Drahoš in the second round. As a result, he appears to have a strong position for the final round.
Zeman may be the only seasoned politician left in the elections, but his health is frail and many Czechs are repulsed by his eastward-leaning positions and populist positions. A Ukrainian protester provided one of the few moments of drama in the weekend elections when she stripped of her shirt and ran at the president, yelling the same words she'd painted on her chest: "Zeman Putin's slut". She was quickly subdued by security personnel.
