Lidove noviny writes that the Czech Postal Service normally handles around 150,000 packages daily, but that in the run-up to Christmas, the figure jumps to 300,000. Just before the holidays kick off, it expects to be trying to handle as many as 350,000 every day. Reporters from the daily newspaper visited a post office at the Nymburk train station and found piles of boxes stacked and waiting to be placed in delivery crates, which had run out. A worker at the office admitted that space sometimes runs out at this time of year and that packages have to be stored outside. An old warehouse owned by the post office in the Prague Malešice neighborhood was recently reconstructed quickly to act as temporary storage for the pre-holiday months. During normal months, it will lie empty but the 1,200 sqm structure now serves as a temporary sorting facility.
