Boeing announced that it's restarted production of 737 MAX airplanes again in Renton, Washington, but it did so on the same day as it fired 6,770 employees. All good things at Boeing have seemed to come with a catch, and so it is with the resumption of 737 MAX production. It was shoddy engineering and cost-cutting in the development of that very plane after all that led to two crashes that killed hundreds of passengers. The company's difficulties caused headaches for numerous airlines around the world that had invested heavily in the new 737 MAX in order to provide long-distance service to under-served locations. The layoffs are a result of the horrific news from airlines, many of which are technically bankrupt since they're obligated to pay back billions of dollars in cancelled flights to customers who bought tickets before the global pandemic grounded fleets everywhere. With huge liabilities and a skeptical flying public, few are in any condition to buy new planes. So yesterday's firings were just part of a plan to lighten their payroll load by 16,000 jobs. Over 5,500 employees had previously accepted voluntary buy-out packages.
