The Portuguese operator Jeronimo Martins is moving forward with its expansion plans for the Polish discount chain Biedronka. The operator recently came in first on a list of Poland’s top FMCG chains published by the daily Rzeczpospolita. It came in fourth last year. With PLN 32.9bn in revenues last year, Jeronimo Martins outpaced energy giants like PGNiG, PGE, Grupa Lotos, KGHM and Tauron, as well as the country’s top insurer PZU.

Poland’s second biggest retailer, Eurocash, came in ninth in 2013, posting PLN 16.5bn in revenues, followed by Metro AG with PLN 15.2bn.
