Central Group's residential project in Prague 3 could get the city of Prague struck from the list of UNESCO heritage sites. The developer chose architect Eva Jiřična's design of three highrise buildings that would replace the former Telecom building. But Josef Štulc, head of the Czech organization which cooperates with UNESCO, warned the project violates UNESCO rules. "If the city hall continues to fail to protect historic center of Prague, there's a real risk of it being struck from the list of the world's cultural heritage monuments," he told Lidové noviny. An equally real question, however, is whether it's more important for the city to have the ability to grow vertically, or to be on a prestigious list. The threat of getting kicked off the list comes up from time to time in connection with highrise projects in locations as far from the historic center as Pankrac – Prague 4. Lidové noviny reminds its readers that Dresden was removed from the list of UNESCO sites ten years ago, but that it hasn't suffered in any way as a result.
